Racing – That’s what I’m talking about! Print E-mail

Jenson Button; Sebastian Vettel(Photo by Mark Thompson/Getty Images)I’m really not supposed to be here, I’m on holiday and not filing copy for this race. But … here I am.

Why? Because I just couldn’t keep quiet! (This may be why the column is called ‘A Writer With a View’.) What a race we saw today at the Hungaroring, seventy laps of wet/dry conditions on a twisting track, with fast-degrading tyres and kerbs like ice. Bring it on!

I’m an unashamed fan of Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton and McLaren, and I don’t have to pretend to be unbiased (Writer With a View again, see) and today’s race was a joy. Not just because of Jenson’s well-earned and splendid victory, but because Jenson and Lewis were allowed to race. When the rain came down for the second time, I was out of my seat, shouting, delirious with excitement as the McLaren drivers diced, exchanging the lead, driving on the edge, running wide, showing their skill and their respect for each other.

No calls of ‘Maintain the gap’ or ‘he is faster than you’ to spoil the racing. That’s what McLaren do – they race. They know their drivers have the skill, respect and maturity to do it.

Good on you, McLaren. You’re kings of sport.
