Off the line Troy Corser got a great start and took the lead but behind him Jonathan Rea made contact with Carlos Checa this took Rea out who took Leon Haslam with him and the unlucky Jakub Smrz got collected by one of the fallen bikes of Jonathan Rea and crashed. Eugene Laverty had to take avoiding action and dropped back to 8th place. At the front Troy Corser was leading but Max Biaggi was close behind and got the run out of the Parabolica to pass Corser down the straight. Noriyuki Haga was running in 3rd when Leon Camier used the slipstream to close up on him and tried to out brake him into the prima Variante but after passing Haga Camier then moved across in front of Haga taking his line away this angered Haga who was forced to go straight on at the chicane and he aimed a kick in Camiers direction in frustration. By lap 5 Biaggi had a healthy lead and was looking unbeatable, Eugene Laverty had made his way past Carlos Checa and Michele Fabrizio and was closing on the back of Haga and pulled alongside the Pata Aprilia rider on the run up to the Ascari chicane but Haga forced Laverty wide and he had to run on at the chicane put him back behind Checa with it all to do again. Leon Camier was having a good run in 2nd place trying his best to catch his team mate at the front when it all went wrong for Camier when he lost the front on the exit of Lesmo 2. By this point Laverty was back passed Checa and Corser and was closing in on Haga in 4th. On the next lap Laverty slipstreamed Haga down the straight and out breaked Fabrizio into the primo Variante to move up two places in short order he now had a 0.7 gap to his team mate in 2nd place with Biaggi a further 5 seconds down the road. With a very healthy lead all Biaggi had to do was maintain his pace ride mistake free and take the win but this proved problematic for the Italian who entered the prima Variante too quickly and was forced to go straight on cutting the chicane. As befell Haga in race 1 on the next lap Biaggi saw the board informing him of a ride through penalty and he shook his head in frustration and took the penalty. He rejoined the race in 12th place. This meant at the front the two Stonex Yamaha riders were left to fight it out for the win with Eugene Laverty calmly sitting behind Marco Melandri waiting to pick his moment to strike. Behind the front two Fabrizio and Haga were fighting it out over 3rd place and almost came together at the della Roggia chicane forcing Haga off track but Haga fought back and took Fabrizio on the next lap at the Ascari chicane but Fabrizio wasn't to be denied the final podium spot and got passed Haga on the inside of the Parabolica. The front two were locked together as they started the final lap as they exited the della Roggia chicane Melandri slowed giving the Laverty the opportunity to pass if he wanted to but he took a long look behind him decided there was no threat from behind and opted to stay behind Melandri. Laverty stuck with Melandri all the way to the final corner, the parabolica, Melandri went in late on the breaks but this forced him wide allowing Laverty to make his moved as he went inside his team mate and made it stick on the run to the line. Eugene Laverty came into this weekend hoping to be on the podium he far exceeded his expectations taking an excellent hard fought double win this should give his confidence a big boost as the season continues.
