World Superbikes Race 2 report - Checa takes victory Print E-mail

Carlos Checa - photo by Mike EvansAs expected Carlos Checa completed the double in race 2 at Miller Motorsports Park and he did so easily pulling away at the start and had 7.5 second lead heading on to the last lap.

There was also a large margin between second and third with Leon Camier getting the better of his team mate Max Biaggi.

Checa got the perfect start although he got passed down the long straight he was able to out break everyone into turn one and from there nobody could catch or even look like catching him. Marco Melandri was in 2nd but was quickly passed by the Aprilia of Camier and by his Yamaha team mate Eugene Laverty. Castrol Honda's Jonathan Rea started deep in the field but was able to get up to 7th by then end of lap 1.

Lap 3 saw three bikes crash with Troy Corser, Ruben Xaus and Nori Haga all crashing in separate incidents. From here the race got quite strung out with small pockets of battles going on through the field.

Biaggi closed in on Laverty and was able to pass easily and pull away. Michel Fabrizio was able to move from 10th to 6th in one lap passing Smrz, Sykes, Rea and Guintoli and a few laps later was able to catch and pass Melandri for 5th and he stayed there till the end.

Smrz, Sykes, Rea and Badovini were involved in a scarp that last a few laps before first Smrz got away then later Badovini leaving Rea and Sykes to fight over 10th place right down to the last lap with Sykes' Kawasaki getting the better of Rea's Honda. Behind them Leon Haslam lost out to Joan Lascorz over the last few laps.

So a comfortable double win for Carlos Checa extends his championship lead, Leon Camier can be well pleased with his second place especially finishing in front of his team mate Max Biaggi who in his post race interview blamed his race one crash on Jonathan Rea, I'm sure the Ulster rider doesn't quite see it that way.

In the championship standings, Checa leads with 195 points, from Melandri on 134, Biaggi on 133 and Laverty on 109.
