Brabham classic takes to the track at the Winton Festival of Speed Print E-mail

BrabhamNo it isn't a mistake, I did mean to write Winton Festival of Speed.

Like Goodwood it show cases a wide range cars, from of historic racers to more modern era sports cars.

Running from August 13-15, there will be displays, a grand parade, demonstration laps and races, but alas, no hill climb.

One of those taking part in the event is  Australian motor sport legend John Bowe. He is the lucky one chosen to be behind the wheel of a rare 1967 Brabham BT23B-2. Fully restored to its original condition, the appearance of this classic will allow motor sport fans a chance of a life time to have a glimpse at the Grand Prix's  of yesteryear.

The Brabham BT23B-2 is one of just three originals that were released with the Coventry Climax FPT engine, aptly named B-1, B-2 and B-3. B-1 was last recorded in the UK in 1974, B-3 was sadly destroyed, and B-2 lives on and will reignite its racing heritage this weekend.

While this Brabham BT23B-2 has been on some of the worlds most iconic circuits including Hockenheim and Monza, Bowe couldn't be more thrilled about having the opportunity to get in the drivers seat at Winton.

“Having not driven a vehicle of this era before, when Trevor Simpson (owner) asked me to race his newly restored B-2, I accepted in a heartbeat. The Coventry Climax engine in particular, is of immense interest to me. They were the engine of the era, and in the late 50s to mid 60s, they were winning world championships.”

“I am extremely grateful to Trevor for helping me live my dream. A car without wings and tyres should present some interesting challenges as far as driving style goes, but as a lover of all things motor racing, I can’t wait!”

With cold and sometimes wet, wintery conditions forecast for the event, it is sure to spice things up for all of those involved.  If you missed Goodwood, and are in country Victoria this weekend, head along. If not, just be thankful that classics like the Brabham BT23B-2 are still around for us to enjoy, with drivers talented enough to get the best out of them. Jacki Warnock Girlracer Magazine
