Introducing US Correspondent Caitlin Shaw Print E-mail
Caitlin ShawI just wanted to introduce myself to all the GirlRacer enthusiasts in this entry and let you know what to expect in this "Driver Diary"...

My name is Caitlin Shaw. I am a 19-year old race car driver aspiring to compete in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series but there are little victories I need to accomplish before I get to that level. I have been competing since I was nine years old beginning in quarter midgets and progressing through the open wheel ranks. Last year I competed in the USAC National Midget Series against professional drivers such as Kasey Kahne, Tony Stewart and their house drivers. I also was fortunate to get the opportunity as a K&N Development Driver to test two (then Craftsman) Camping World Trucks with Toyota Racing Development.

I learned a lot through all of my 2008 season and almost had an opportunity to run in the fall 2008 Martinsville NASCAR Truck race. However, there is a plan for everything and the timing just wasn't right. NASCAR wanted me to get stock car experience because to this point I had only competed in the midgets and open wheel series. The midgets were great speed and reaction training with the horsepower to weight ratio (National Midgets weigh 900lbs and have around 400 horsepower -- this is enough to out qualify the cup cars on speed at Phoenix International Raceway!), but I understand why NASCAR wanted me to run some stock cars before I moved into the truck series. The weight difference and allowing the car to roll through the corner was different from the quick throttle pick-up in the USAC Midget cars.

This is when Calico Coatings really stepped up and helped me to get through this "yellow flag" in my attempt to fulfill my NASCAR dreams. Tracy and Gary let me run their No. 12 Calico late model at Hickory Motor Speedway for the amount of races it would take to get licensed to run in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. It was just what I needed to get my goals back to the green flag. The guys helped me a lot and with Gary and Bradley familiarizing me with different scenarios the stock cars produced I gained a few top-ten finishes and finally got that call from NASCAR welcoming me to the NASCAR family of truck racing!

This short background puts me to where I am today. I'm enthusiastic about my racing career and would like all of you to share in the excitement, learning process and adrenaline of my life and the lives of GirlRacers everywhere. It's going to be a busy month but I can't wait to step on the gas as the green flag falls in front of me!

For the next few weeks I'm going to fill everyone in on my new developments, other women in the motorsports industry and of course my racing action. So stay tuned to www.girlracer.co.uk each week for the complete "Hot Pass" to everything Caitlin!
