The F1 newswire – Tuesday 24 January Print E-mail

Jérôme D'Ambrosio All the news the teams see fit to print, in one handy digest produced every 24 hours.

While Kimi Raikkonen spent a second day testing a two-year-old Renault in Valencia, LOTUS were busy announcing that Jérôme D'Ambrosio has joined the team as third driver for 2012. In other news, HRT have another partnership deal lined up.

“LOTUS F1 Team is pleased to announce that Jérôme D'Ambrosio has joined the team as third driver for the 2012 FIA Formula 1 World Championship season,” the press release read. “Jérôme, who contested last year’s season as a race driver for Marussia Virgin Racing, will attend all races in 2012, working with the race driver pairing of Kimi Räikkönen and Romain Grosjean. The 26 year-old Belgian will be ready to stand-in for either of the two race drivers if required. Jérôme D'Ambrosio said: ‘It’s a great feeling to be joining Lotus F1 Team. It’s an exciting next step in my career. I contested a complete season in F1 as a race driver for a smaller team where I learnt a lot about Formula 1. Now, I have the opportunity to work with one of the top teams with great potential for my future development. With my recent race experience, I know I can make a valuable contribution. Of course, I would love to be racing, but racing with a top team. Being associated with Lotus F1 Team should be more beneficial and this is the choice I have made. This opportunity is one I couldn’t afford to miss. My desire to get back in a race seat in the future is motivating me to do the best job possible in my new position.’ Eric Boullier, team principal and managing director said: ‘To have a third driver who is highly motivated, fresh and talented and who contested the full 2011 season is highly beneficial for us. In Jérôme we have someone we know well who integrates beneficially with the squad. He impressed as reserve driver for us in 2010 and at the end of that year he made a strong showing in the young driver test. He also showed strongly in his rookie season as an F1 race driver. I am looking forward to working with Jérôme again and think he is a perfect addition to our driving strength.’”

And from Spain comes the news that HRT have joined up with an electric bicycle manufacturer. Hold the jokes… “The electric bicycle brand Yamimoto and HRT Formula 1 Team have signed a collaboration deal by which Yamimoto will become the team’s Official Supplier of sustainable mobility for 2012,” the release read. “HRT will become, through this deal, a pioneer in the world of Formula 1 by integrating an alternative energy to petrol in its mobility plan and will use Yamimoto’s electric bicycles to move around at Grands Prix and away from them. Alternative energies are assuming more and more importance every day in modern societies so, without a doubt, incorporating them to such an innovative and technologic environment as is Formula 1 would give the young Spanish team an added value. Collaborating with national brands and companies is one of HRT’s basic lines of action and one that fits perfectly with the team’s philosophy when looking for synergies and the strengthening of Spanish brands in the world.”
