Verity Young interview Print E-mail

VerityAs one of the brightest young female driving stars Verity Young has a lot to look forward to. We caught up with the 16v Golf GTI championship runner just after a stunning drive at Castle Combe.

You enjoyed a great weekend at Castle Combe, how are you feeling about the rest of the season? Is a title still in your sights?

A few titles before the end of the seaon are in my sights! I'm getting closer to the podium every race meeting i do, and the car is running well. So we shall see very soon.

You race your own Mark 2 16V Golf GTI, which tracks does the car tend to favour and why?

At Castle Combe the car favoured the twists and turns, and the straights, as i was catching people near to the end of the straight! This is due to engine work i have had done by Saxon, all though you are only allowed to do so much within the regs.

I have spent a lot of money investing in a very good suspension so this definatley helps at circuits where i can put as much power on round corners, and the car just sticks! Its also nice to feel that the car is reliable around corners, and wont suddenly lose control.

You've enjoyed a great relationship with Saxon motorsport and we've heard rumours a Lotus Elise drive may be coming up - What does the future hold for your racing career? Will you continue in the Golf Gti championship or look to try your hand at a different series?

Yes, during my racing career and mechanics career i have met a few people and made friends. Its not what you know, it's who you know! There are plans with another company to develop a racing team, which i will be involved with! And my love for Vw's is going to be never ending, so i can safely say i shall keep with the GTI Champ for the next few years, and race in something else alongsied it i hope!

What advice would you have for fellow 'Girlracers' looking to break into the sport?

Don't be put off by a very male orientated sport! I have dealt with sexist remarks, but soon showed them whos boss on track! It's a great feeling, knowing that a girl can beat the boys, and just to see peoples faces at the end of a race, if they didnt know you where a girl!

I started in Karting, and i really do think this is a great step into any form of racing. Then slowly progress to cars, once you have the confidence in handling a kart! And lastly, enjoy yourself but drive safely!  Samantha Wilcox Girlracer Magazine
