Webber who did brilliantly to qualify in second, had
a disastrous start. He spun on the first lap, managed
to keep the car going but re-joined at the back of the
field. It was such a shame although the McLarens and
Ferraris would always have got past him, he could have
got some good points for the team. Due to the conditions,
he was also caught out with a number of spins and eventually
finished tenth. However, his result was still better
than Coulthard who, on the weekend he announced his
retirement from racing, qualified eleventh and failed
to finish the race. He tried to pass Vettel in his Toro
Rosso and did not pull it off. The two of them spun
off finishing in the gravel track on the first lap.
Just like Monaco, Ferrari got their wet weather strategy
wrong. Massa's race we can write off as it was a disaster
from beginning to end. In fact the whole weekend was
a disaster for him, having had a big shunt in practice
on Friday, he qualified ninth on Saturday and finished
thirteenth in the race having spun five times. To be
fair, he was lucky to finish the race at all as each
of his spins kept him out of the barriers. Team mate
Kimi qualified third and finished fourth but in his
first pit stop, the team did not change his tyres on
the assumption the track would dry out. This being Silverstone,
the rain continued and he had no grip with old tyres.
Heidfeld in his BMW Sauber finished second having qualified
fifth. I think he is the only person who managed not
to spin for the entire race. He kept out of trouble
and deserved his finish. Team mate Kubica qualified
in tenth and failed to finish, aquaplaning off the track.
Kubica ended his race on the same lap as Button who
also aquaplaned into the gravel track. It had not been
a good race for Button in any event. He was doing no
more than damage limitation at the back having qualified
in seventeenth. Barrichello however, having qualified
sixteenth, finished third as he changed onto the extreme
wet tyres and therefore had the grip to pass the others
and at times he was lapping four seconds faster than
anyone else.
Alonso kept out of trouble in his Renault, qualifying
and finishing in sixth. He used up his tyres very quickly
and therefore was not able to put up much defence and
Kovalainen was able to pass him on the last lap. He
did, however, fare better than team mate Piquet who
qualified seventh and failed to finish, yet another
victim of the weather.
Trulli went away from the race with two points for
a seventh place finish having qualified fourteenth.
Team mate Glock qualified twelfth and finished twelfth.
Trulli did better in the rain although both of them
spun off, Glock suffering the most. Glock lapped Massa
and he appeared to feel that Massa had not paid heed
to the blue flags. The hand gestures between the two
of them were just incredible bearing in mind the speed
they were driving and the conditions they were driving
in.
The Williams continued to slide backwards. Rosberg
had a dreadful weekend starting from the pit lane after
suspension problems meant a re-build of the car after
qualifying. He did, however, finish ninth despite the
fact he drove into the back of Glock. Nakajima had a
much better race, qualifying fifteenth and taking points
by finishing eighth. He lost seventh place to Trulli
on the last lap. It was a shame for Nakajima but the
team's decision to put him on extreme wets paid off
after they had seen the success of Barrichello.
Vettel in his Toro Rosso had a brilliant qualifying,
starting from eighth before he was taken out by Coulthard
on the first lap. Team mate Bourdais qualified thirteenth
and finished eleventh. Neither Force India finished
the race, both spinning off the track.
Only thirteen cars finished this race, Massa being
the last to cross the line, two laps down. When you
have a rain filled race, it always brings an unpredictable
result. The good news for McLaren is that they have
won at a circuit which favours the design of the Ferrari.
This win will also give Lewis a much needed boost and
he will hopefully go into the next race with his head
held high and ready to fight for the championship.
