Canadian Grand Prix
By Sarah

Robert Kubica certainly exorcised any demons that he may have had at the Montreal circuit when he won his first race, and the first race for his BMW Sauber team. He had started on the dirty side of the grid in second place alongside Hamilton. Some might say he lucked into his first win with the demise of both Kimi and Lewis and what appeared to be team orders instructing Heidfeld to move over for him. However, one of the joys of F1 is that anything can happen and to win, you have to finish. Kubica has looked like a race winner for the last two seasons and he deserves this victory. Heidfeld qualified eighth and came back second providing a 1:2 for the team which means they have achieved their goals set for this year.

The final podium position went to DC in his Red Bull. He seemed fairly bemused at being on the podium, particularly as he started in thirteenth. I think he accepts that he did luck into finishing on the podium but he is experienced enough to grab the points wherever he can. As usual, he was fuelled long and this strategy worked out well. Team mate Webber qualified tenth and finished twelfth. His two stop strategy did not work due to the safety car incident. Bearing in mind he has out qualified his team mate all season, he is probably gutted that the first podium for the team this season should go toDC.

Due to the nature of this track, it is quite common for the safety car to be deployed as if a car stops on circuit, it is normally quite difficult to remove it. This therefore meant when Sutil ground to a halt on lap 15 with flames pouring from his car, the safety car was deployed whilst the car was removed. It was as a result of this incident that Lewis, Kimi, Kubica and Rosberg all filed into the pits and the nature of the race changed.

I'm not sure where to start with Lewis who committed what can only be described as a rookie mistake. He had a fantastic qualifying, snatching pole at the very last minute. He was on course for a victory and got away from the start, keeping everyone behind him. At the first pit stop Kimi was in second, Kubica third and Rosberg fourth. They all piled into the pits together. Lewis' stop was not as quick as it could have been and when he exited his pit box, Kimi and Kubica were in front of him. As the safety car had been deployed, the pit lane exit was closed with the red light showing. Both Kimi and Kubica stopped but for some reason, Lewis did not. It seems he did not see the light and instead was concentrating on Kimi and Kubica and how to pass them. The end result was he ploughed into the back of Kimi ending both their races. On the one hand if you are going to fail to finish a race, it is quite handy to take out your main rival. However, as a result of this he will take a ten place grid penalty at the next Grand Prix. I am normally the first to complain about Ferrari winging to the stewards but in this case, they were justified. His team mate, Heikki did not manage to bring any points home for the team either and having qualified in seventh, he finished nineth.

It has to be said that Kimi was remarkably composed when he got out of his car and merely pointed the red light out to Lewis. There are other drivers who I am sure would have resorted to violence. His team mate Massa qualified sixth and finished fifth after quite a disappointing race. He had a re-fuelling problem which meant he entered the pits but picked up no fuel so had to come back in again. During the end of the race he was behind the Toyota of Glock and did not get past him. Due to the difficulties of the track, Massa had to be careful not to try anything too dramatic for fear of running off line.

As a result of the problems experienced by both McLaren and Ferrari, BMW Sauber have gone away leading the championship with their driver, Kubica, leading the driver's championship.

Toyota found themselves in the midst of the excitement. Quite surprisingly, Glock not only out-qualified his team mate Trulli but also finished above him. Glock qualified eleventh and finished fourth taking his first points of the year. He made a bad start, loosing three places, leaving him behind Trulli. For a lot of the time the Toyotas were fighting themselves and as always, holding up a number of the other drivers. Trulli reported troubles with his brakes towards the end of the race and on a difficult track, this was not ideal. However, a great result for the team.

Another shock result was seeing Barrichello finishing seventh in his Honda, gaining yet more points. Team mate Button qualified twentieth after failing to put in a timed lap due to gear box problems. He started from the pit lane. His strategy was ruined with the deployment of the safety car and he finished eleventh.

The final points position went to Vettel in his Toro Rosso having qualified in nineteenth. This is quite remarkable as on Saturday morning he had a major crash which meant he could not take place in qualifying as the team had to build him a new car. Team mate Bourdais had a bad weekend qualifying eighteenth and finishing thirteenth. He said that the challenge for him was to bring the car home in one piece and he gave up the possibility of trying to drive fast. He described it as being the worst weekend of his entire career.

It was an unfortunate weekend for the Williams boys. Rosberg had a fantastic qualifying starting in fifth and he passed Alonso into turn one and began to pull away from him. However, he was caught up in the pit lane incident as he followed Lewis down the pit lane and after Lewis had driven into the back of Kimi, Rosberg drove into the back of Lewis. Although this only broke his front wing and he was able to get round and back into the pits, he was only able to finish tenth. Team mate Nakajima qualified twelfth but failed to finish the race after an incident with Button. He damaged his front wing which detached itself and got stuck under the chassis.

Neither Renault finished the race. Alonso qualified fourth, once again vastly out qualifying his team mate who qualified fifteenth. Piquet seemed to be struggling all weekend. He spun on lap 27 but kept the engine running and continued with the race. However, on lap 41 he was retired in the pits due to a problem with his brakes. Alonso's race was over just five laps later as he got into trouble at turn 7, skidding on the debris on the track.

Neither Force India driver finished their race either. Sutil retired with a gear box problem. Fisichella qualified seventeenth but he spun out on lap fifty three.

The main concern with this race weekend was the state of the circuit and whether it would last the race. In the end, the circuit appeared to hold up fine and the problem appeared to be driver error. It seems the drivers who failed to score points complained about the state of the track. Those that scored points decided the track was not quite so bad after all!
