American Le Mans at Mid-ohio by Wendy Stein

This past weekend was the third race of the American Le Mans race series
(ALMS) and it packed such a surprising finish in several classes. The
No. 16 Dyson Lola EX257 AER car driven by James Weaver and Butch Leitzinger
finished first with the No. 20 Dyson car driven by Chris Dyson and Andy
Wallace in a close second. The No. 2 Audi R8 car, driven by Frank Beila
and Emanuele Pirro finished third on the podium, giving Michelin tires a
sweep on the podium.

The Champion Racing Audi team while driving their R8s has normally been
the power contender in the LMP1 class usually finishing 1-2 when running
both cars.

The No.15 Factory Zytec piloted by Hayanari Shimoda marked only the
second time at Mid-Ohio since August 2001 that an Audi or Lola had not been the
pole sitter.

The LMP2 class was not without its own big news. The introduction of
the No. 8 Mazda-powered Sportsbook.com/B-K Motorsports Courage the LMP2
class has started to heat up and create quite the race. The win at Mid-Ohio
was the first for the Mazda team in the ALMS and in its return to endurance
racing since the win at the 1991 24 hours of Le Mans in the 787B car.
The No. 37 Telesis Intersport Lola B05/40 AER was second in the class, but
only completed 85 laps due to mechanical issues.

The No. 10 Courage C-65/AER Miracle car faced a disappointing
disqualification with fifteen minutes left in the race and a sizeable
lead on the field. Driver Jeff Bucknum was flagged off of the course after
facing a penalty from IMSA for being in the car one minute and sixteen
seconds too long.

In GT1 another 1-2 sweep with No. 3 Compuware Corvette C6-R driven by
Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell in first and the No. 4 Compuware Corvette
C6-R driven by Oliver Gavin and Olivier Berretta in second place.
Michelin again swept the GT1 podium with the No. 63 ACME Saleen driven
by Johnny Mowlem and Terry Borcheller in third place.

In GT2, the No. 23 Alex Job Racing Porsche, driven by Romain Dumas and
Timo Bernhard, took the win ending the 17 year jinx at Mid-Ohio. The
No. 31 Petersen White Lightning Porsche driven by Patrick Long and Jorg
Begmeister followed in second place.
