This must be the biggest and best UK car event of
the season and my what a scorcher! I was gob smacked
to see literally a sea of gleaming to the point of
eye squintingly gawjus maxed up cars at Silverstone;
it took hours to walk around the whole show and everywhere
you turned there was another car club or something
to catch your eye and not just the promotional ladies
walking around in their underwear!
Girlracer had a huge stand right by the edge of the
track and grandstand, with three rows of modded cars
on show including Sassy’s fab dragon painted
Honda Civic, Amy’s very green and very low Pug
106, Ady’s slick black MX-5 and top female racing
driver, Katie Croucher’s race prepared pink
and white Fiesta. The stand was always a hive of activity
and social hub with flurries of visitors both to the
marquee for Dunlop freebies and to dribble - or was
that drip as it was a very hot day - over our shiny
motors.
It was great to see a huge turnout of GR regulars
and newbies that the GR stand ended up being something
like a family reunion! Tiny had rigged up a fab sound
system to his Smart so we were all boogying on down
to some top tunes (okay I admit that was just me then)
on a major sugar rush high thanks to the hundreds
of different sweets that people had donated for the
event. For me it was great to meet at last Chantelle,
Bonez, Looby Lou, Martin, Cossie Mich, Centosportin’
(Claire) and the fab Katie Croucher who has nearly
convinced me to do a one-to-one trackday in her BMW
Mini Cooper! When it got too hot, me Chantelle and
Centosportin’ (Claire) were very happy to sit
in the marquee and watch the half naked male totty
wander past. Oh it’s a tough life. Thank God
for hot summer days.
Ady took full advantage of an open track at the event
and paid up to see how sideways he could get his MX-5.
There was a fantastic view of one evil corner of the
track from the GR stand and there were a few hair
raising and cringeworthy moments when other competitors
were getting a little too frisky with each other.
Everyone seemed to have their own technique for trying
to stack it and quite a few people came off in a cloud
of dust. Definite crowd pleasers were the Nissan 200SX
drifters who ate the tarmac up sideways.
The main straight at Silverstone was utilised as
a popular 0-60 mph test run which attracted every
car possible from Skoda Fabias and Volvo Estates to
Scoobies, Evos and hot hatches. Now I can understand
a car blowing up on Santa Pod strip under all that
pressure, but at Silverstone on a make shift 0-60
stint? It did happen much to the crowd’s delight.
The guy even got out and bowed to his audience!
Just as I thought I’d seen everything at the
show I stumbled across the pit lane hosting the trade
and car mag stands which had the added special attraction
of pole dancing girlies and yet more wannabe glamour
models. Where were Gail and Rach when I needed them
like at Donny South?! I felt the magnetic attraction
to two TVRs, a Tuscan and a T350, which had been sexed-up
and modded with 20” rims and placed on show
on the Fast Car Mag stand, whereas rather amusingly
the magnetic attraction for the lads on the same stand
were the scantily clad females on the roof of the
show truck waving their underwear above their heads!
Nice. Well at least I had free run of the TVRs!
Trax was a great finale for a fab show year where
GR has just grown and grown in popularity. I cannot
wait to see what’s to come for GR next season
so watch this space! In the meantime, don’t
forget to come to the finals of the British Touring
Car Championship at Brands Hatch the first weekend
of October where we will be supporting Fiona Leggate.
