I arrived on day two of the Kent Modded Show to
a sea of tents, discarded disposable barbeques,
beer bottles and the smell of burgers and bacon
in the air. I must have missed a flippin' good party
the night before as people were slowly emerging
out of their sweaty canvas temporary homes.
The show this year was bigger than before and attracted
up to 100 car clubs from all over the UK, some as
far away as Wales, all displaying motors in various
stages of modding. Some better than others I may
add. The Chavtastic award goes to a very tidy white
1.4-litre Renault 5 Turbo with ridiculous mahoosive
V-shaped rear exhausts and a completely pimped out
interior. In fact, it was so modded you'd have no
idea you were driving a Renault. Sunglasses were
a necessity to shield the glare from the gleaming
chrome detailing. Secretly, I thought it was cool.
In the main hall Girlracer had a strategically
placed stand in the corner right next to the entrance
door to 'Babe World' where Stu and Ady seemed to
disappear to frequently, taking photos for their,
ahem, private collection. Stu was also on top form
getting models to pose over Ady's MX-5, and going
by the large grin on Ady's face, I don't think he
minded. The boy's room will be deluged with ex-rated
pics by the end of today.
Was great to see the usual hardcore GR crowd out
supporting the club, including big cheese boss Gaz
who had been at the show for the whole weekend -
hoorah, but I think this is because it was within
the vicinity of the M25 and woops I'm now so cruisin'
for a bruisin'! I reckon I managed to polish off
the stand's infamous jaffa cakes for lunch washed
down by a few gallons of tea.
Ady was showing off his latest mod - apart from
the shiny new trophy he won at a recent MX-5 event
- TV screens integrated into his sun visors. These
looked the dogs, although not sure if quite practical
when needed for their proper use! Mandy's pink 206cc
had a lot of admiring looks and I discovered how
the paint effect was created by, believe it or not,
cling film!
The most bizarre and unusually modded cars had
to be three TVRs in the main hall. I thought the
Tuscan and Sagaris both come with mental, head-turning
styling as standard, but to add bodykits and airbrushing
on top of this is just plain crazy. Each to their
own of course
.it's just not my thing.
The public display area saw plenty of adrenalin
fuelled action from a stunt team where one guy drove
a fruity-sounding Bedford Rascal truck around on
two wheels while nutty bikers jumped ramps. There
was a fire explosive finale too, which made us sensitive
girlies jump out of our skin at GR stand headquarters.
This may well have been the last main modified
car show of 2006 now that Trax has been and gone,
so here's to a bigger and better bumper 2007 season
of shows and motorsport for us all at GR to get
our teeth into!
