Shelley Jory takes the Flag

British power boat Champion Shelley Jory has enjoyed a unique sporting weekend - taking part in her home City’s Olympic Flag handover celebrations and competing in a classic power boat race.

On Sunday Shelley started Southampton’s flag relay on the water, waving a giant “2012” flag from the bow of a classic power boat and then handing it over to four teams of rowers. Shelley then raced to the Civic Centre to join the Mayor of Southampton as he raised the flag, accompanied by the sounds and sights of traditional Chinese Lion and Dragon dances

Shelley joined in the celebrations that followed, even trying her hand at trampolining, after the Mayor had bravely led the way!

On Saturday Shelley had taken the helm of the same classic power boat, GEE to compete in the famous power boat race, the Cowes-Torquay. Racing with VIP guest, Fiona

Pankhurst from Hampshire marine company, Raymarine Shelley took on some of the world’s best power boaters in the dash to Torquay and back to Cowes. In a tough, competitive sprint to the line off the Royal Yacht Squadron Shelley powered Gee into third place in class and took the Ladies Trophy.

Speaking at the hand over celebration Shelley said “It’s been an amazing, hectic weekend, and really emotional too. I was delighted to win the Ladies Trophy in such a historic power boat race and equally honoured to be asked to start the Olympic flag handover. My sport is not in the Olympics so it felt particularly special that I was a part of the build up to London 2012.”

Shelley continues her racing in P1 with Team Lucas Oil at the Spanish Grand Prix from 12 -14 September.
