Hannah Jade Handford StyringMy first time on skis was at the age of 2, but I really started skiing when I was 5 years old. I was going to do athletics but the guys at the track told me I couldn’t run until I was 7 years old!   I’ve skied nearly every week since then at Sharks Ski Club in Sheffield.  I started out as a racer doing slalom but realised I was better at Moguls (bumps) skiing.  The atmosphere is much friendlier in Freestyle skiing with everyone helping each other out.

I entered my first Moguls comp in 2003 at the age of 5!  I entered my first British Artificial Moguls Championships at Sheffield a couple of days after my 6th birthday and came 19th overall and 6th in the Ladies.  I beat some of the then Yorkshire Freestyle Team who were much older than me!  I remember winning a baseball cap from Eric Berthon Ski de Bosses and it still hangs on my bedroom wall!  I now train in the Alps with Eric, a former World Moguls Champion, every autumn.  My first ski holiday was to Tignes/Val d’Isere in 2004 and I skied some off piste moguls in my first day on snow!

Since then I’ve been competing on the UK circuit in slalom and Moguls, winning my age category and gradually improving in the overall competition.  I stopped skiing slalom last year to improve my Moguls technique and because it was clashing with my Moguls training: and it’s really paid off.  I came 2nd in the Ladies Moguls in the Yorkshire Championships in 2009 and then won the British Indoor Ski Championships later in the year.  In 2010 I entered my first international competitions on snow, competing in Sudelfeld and Brauneck, Germany in the German Cup and British Championships.  I came 10th and then 8th in the German Cup then took Bronze medal in the British Championships, beaten by two girls who live and train in Chatel ski resort in France.  I came back to the UK to win Gold in the SNO!zone Moguls Challenge in May 2010.

I have been a member of the Yorkshire Freestyle Ski Team since 2005 working my way up from the Development Squad to the Full A Team in 2007. In 2010 I was selected for the England Development Moguls Team and will ski for them for the first time in June 2010.   I am coached by my dad, Pete, and Jeff Fozzard who also coaches Andy Longley the Great Britain World Cup Moguls Skier.  I have recently signed to Storm Skis  and Andy David from the company and also an ex-GBR Europa Cup skier will start to help in my air coaching.  I put in a lot of training so I’m very fortunate to be sponsored by SNO!zone snow hall at Castleford and Sheffield Ski Village.   I also do trampolining with a coach and also at home and fitness training at the English Institute of Sport where Freestyle Skiing has now been recognised as an elite sport.

I still hold the record for being the youngest skier to compete in Kings’ Ski Races, representing the University of Sheffield at the age of six!  And yes, I won my heats!
I still do a bit of slalom but mainly on snow rather than artificial slopes.  I would like to get better at Moguls and eventually compete on the World Cup circuit, or even at the Olympics.  That’s a long way off though so in the mean time I just plan to enjoy my skiing, and strangely enough athletics as well!
